M&T Banking Manager Mayra Colón ‘95 Receives Distinguished Alumni Award

Mayra Colón is L.E.P. (Limited English Proficiency) Program Manager for Multicultural Banking at M&T Bank. She is one of three founding members of the Multicultural Banking team, collaborating with retail and business banking to build relationships with diverse communities throughout M&T’s footprint. Mayra, who is fluent in Spanish, has been responsible for launching the strategy and execution around M&T's enterprise approach to non-English language – an aspect of banking that is heavily regulated.

She created a program allowing customer-interacting colleagues to become L.E.P. Certified, with hundreds of employees throughout her operating region having successfully completed the process in 22 supported languages. She has also worked to add non-English language options to M&T’s communication vehicles and channels. Mayra is an M&T Talent Acquisition Ambassador and has served as vice president and president of M&T’s HOLA Western New York Employee Resource Group.

She has been with M&T for more than 25 years, including product and project management roles in digital, debit, and marketing. She is particularly proud of earning her M.B.A. from Rochester Institute of Technology while working full-time. Mayra is on the board of the nonprofit Field & Fork Network in Buffalo and serves as secretary.

“My road to Seton Hill University began in ninth grade when I dared to dream that college was a viable option for me,” Mayra said. “I chose Seton Hill because of its quiet, beautiful campus, the people I had met and the generous financial aid I received.”

The Distinguished Alumni Leadership Award is one of the highest honors given to a Seton Hill graduate. Since establishing the award in 1987, Seton Hill has honored more than 300 Setonians as distinguished alumni. The award recognizes leadership in education, business, science and technology, the arts, volunteerism and philanthropy.
