Twenty-three Seton Hill University students were recognized by the Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill as recipients of scholarships named in memory of or in honor of Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill. The students attended a reception and prayer service on Sunday, February 22, at Doran Hall. This is the third year that Seton Hill University students receiving these scholarships have been recognized by the Sisters of Charity.

“The Sisters of Charity see this luncheon as a way to share our history, mission, and tradition of service with another generation,” said Sister Brycelyn Eyler, SC, coordinator of the event and a member of the U.S. Provincial Council.

The Sisters of Charity maintain a strong interest in the programs and activities offered at Seton Hill University. For nearly 90 years, the Sisters of Charity and Seton Hill University have been working together to provide a quality education based on sound Catholic values.

Students honored include:

Eli Amour, of Pittsburgh, Pa., who is the recipient of the Mother Victoria Brown Scholarship. This scholarship was founded in 1974 by a Seton Hill alumna.

Albert Bowers, of Elizabeth, Pa., who received the Sister Mary T. Schmidt Scholarship. This scholarship is named in honor of a renowned scholar and religious who was president at Seton Hill from 1970 to 1977. It is awarded to students who rank in the top 20 to 30 percent of their high school class and is valued at ¼ tuition. It is renewable for four years if the student maintains a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.6.

Jennifer Cartier, of Pittsburgh, Pa., who received a Sister of Charity Scholarship. Application for this scholarship is made by a Sister of Charity on behalf of the student, and recipients are relatives of the sisters or people associated with the Sisters of Charity through education, ministry, or employment.

Mayara Damasceno, of Greensburg, Pa., who received the Mother Claudia Glenn Scholarship. This scholarship was established in January 1989 to honor Mother Claudia Glenn, former professor of English and dean of students. Mother Claudia also served four terms as Mother General of the Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill and as president of the Board of Trustees. These funds are to be used for students in the Humanities who have high potential and high need.

Kimberly Franczak, of Jefferson Hills, Pa., who received a Sister of Charity of Seton Hill Scholarship. Application for this scholarship is made by a Sister of Charity on behalf of the student, and recipients are relatives of the sisters or people associated with the Sisters of Charity through education, ministry, or employment.

Jillian Garrison, of Cadiz, Ohio, who received a Sister of Charity of Seton Hill Scholarship. Application for this scholarship is made by a Sister of Charity on behalf of the student, and recipients are relatives of the sisters or people associated with the Sisters of Charity through education, ministry, or employment.

Whitney Garrison of Cadiz, Ohio, who received a Sister of Charity of Seton Hill Scholarship. Application for this scholarship is made by a Sister of Charity on behalf of the student, and recipients are relatives of the sisters or people associated with the Sisters of Charity through education, ministry, or employment.

Hallie Geary, of Tarrs, Pa., who received the Sister Miriam Joseph Murphy Scholarship. This scholarship is named in honor of Sister Miriam Joseph Murphy, SC, who served as a professor in the English Department for 43 years. This scholarship is awarded to one or more sophomore students who demonstrate promise as English majors.

Emily Heinicka, of Irwin, Pa., who received a Sister of Charity of Seton Hill Scholarship. Application for this scholarship is made by a Sister of Charity on behalf of the student, and recipients are relatives of the sisters or people associated with the Sisters of Charity through education, ministry, or employment.

Stephanie Lazzaro, of Bethel Park, Pa., who received a Sister of Charity of Seton Hill Scholarship.

Kirstin Logan, of Cape May Court House, NJ, who received the Sister Rose Angela Cunningham Scholarship. This scholarship was named in honor of Sister Rose Angela, Cunningham, SC, who chaired the Home Economics Department and co-founded the Seton Hill University Nursery School that is today’s Seton Hill University Child Development Center. This scholarship was established by Seton Hill Home Economics alumnae and friends to “honor [Sister Rose Angela’s] gentle, courteous, and caring manner which served as an inspiration and model for our personal growth as ‘Seton Hill Women.’”

Erin Negri, of Scottdale, Pa., who received the Sister de Chantel Leis Scholarship. This scholarship is named for Sister de Chantel Leis, SC, who taught Latin and served as Department Chair, Dean of Women, and Director of Alumnae Relations during her tenure at Seton Hill University.

Anne Marie Olesky, of Greensburg, Pa., who received a Sister of Charity of Seton Hill Scholarship. Application for this scholarship is made by a Sister of Charity on behalf of the student, and recipients are relatives of the sisters or people associated with the Sisters of Charity through education, ministry, or employment.

Jessica Orlowski, of New Kensington, Pa., who received a Sister of Charity of Seton Hill Scholarship. Application for this scholarship is made by a Sister of Charity on behalf of the student, and recipients are relatives of the sisters or people associated with the Sisters of Charity through education, ministry, or employment.

Amie Pietrzak, of Pittsburgh, Pa., who received the Sister Mary Schmidt Scholarship. This scholarship is named in honor of a renowned scholar and religious who was president at Seton Hill from 1970 to 1977. It is awarded to students who rank in the top 20 to 30 percent of their high school class and is valued at ¼ tuition. Tiffany Ramsden, of New Alexandria, Pa., who received the Sister Muriel Flamman Scholarship. This scholarship was established in January 1989 to honor Sister Muriel Flamman, former professor of biology and dean of administration. She is described as a woman “who worked hard to foster the things that add beauty to a place . . . a woman who offered us knowledge which came from the roots of Seton Hill.” Funds are to be used to assist students in the science and mathematics fields.

Logan Sierra, of Ligonier, Pa., who received a Sister of Charity of Seton Hill Scholarship. Application for this scholarship is made by a Sister of Charity on behalf of the student, and recipients are relatives of the sisters or people associated with the Sisters of Charity through education, ministry, or employment.

Clare Simmers, of Pittsburgh, Pa., who received a Sister of Charity of Seton Hill Scholarship. Application for this scholarship is made by a Sister of Charity on behalf of the student, and recipients are relatives of the sisters or people associated with the Sisters of Charity through education, ministry, or employment.

Sierra Smith, of Latrobe, Pa., who received the Sister Rose Irene Boggs Scholarship. This scholarship, named in honor of Sister Rose Irene Boggs, who was a long time professor and registrar at the University, is awarded to students who exhibit academic promise and financial need.

Sally Stone, of New York, NY, who received the Sister de Chantel Leis Scholarship. This scholarship is named for Sister de Chantel Leis, SC, who taught Latin and served as Department Chair, Dean of Women, and Director of Alumnae Relations during her tenure at Seton Hill University.

Catherine Tomlinson, of Derry, Pa., who received a Sister of Charity of Seton Hill Scholarship. Application for this scholarship is made by a Sister of Charity on behalf of the student, and recipients are relatives of the sisters or people associated with the Sisters of Charity through education, ministry, or employment.

Ashley White, of Pittsburgh, Pa., who received a Sister of Charity of Seton Hill Scholarship.
