Nineteen students from Seton Hill University will be recognized by the Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill for having received scholarships named in honor of, or memory of, Sisters of Charity. This is the second year that Seton Hill students receiving these scholarships have been invited to a liturgy and luncheon at Caritas Christi, the motherhouse of the Congregation.

“The Sisters of Charity see this luncheon as a way to share our history, mission, and tradition of service with another generation,” said Sister Brycelyn Eyler, SC, coordinator of the event and a member of the Provincial Council.

The students invited to attend the February 24 event include:

Albert C. Bowers III, from Elizabeth, PA, who received a Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill Scholarship. Application for this scholarship is made by a Sister of Charity on behalf of the student, and recipients are relatives of the sisters or people associated with the Sisters of Charity through education, ministry, or employment. Bowers, son of Albert Bowers II and Donna Bowers, is a freshman majoring in music education.

Sarah T. Buffo, of Duquesne, PA, who received a Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill Scholarship. Buffo, a senior biology major, is the daughter of Anthony and Regina Buffo.

Katie M. Burns, of Martins Ferry, OH, who is the recipient of the Josephine Mary Cipriany Patrick Scholarship. This scholarship was founded by Melio W. Patrick in honor of Josephine Cipriany Patrick, SHU ’45, and in honor of Sister Rose Angela, Cunningham, SC. Sister rose Angela chaired the Home Economics Department and co-founded the Seton Hill University Nursery School that is today’s Seton Hill University Child Development Center. This scholarship is awarded annually to students who major in dietetics. Burns, daughter of Michael and Cindy Burns, is a junior majoring in dietetics.

Nicole L. Klein, of Greensburg, PA, who received the Sister Mary Leon Bettwy, SC, Scholarship. This scholarship is awarded to a junior chemistry major based on outstanding performance in the first three years of college chemistry as judged by the full-time members of the Chemistry faculty. It is named for Sister Mary Leon Bettwy, SC, who served as a Chemistry professor, Director of Student Personnel Services and Dean of Students, and treasurer of the Seton Hill Alumnae Association during her tenure at the University. A senior biochemistry major, Klein is the daughter of Gregory and Darla Klein.

Kimberly M. Franczak, of Jefferson Hills, Pa., who is the recipient of a Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill Scholarship. Franczak, daughter of Michael and Linda Franczak, is a sophomore majoring in two-dimensional art and graphic design.

Jillian M. Garrison, of Cadiz, OH, who received a Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill Scholarship. Garrison, daughter of Gary and Margaret Garrison, is a freshman.

Emily E. Heinicka, of Irwin, PA, who is the recipient of a Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill Scholarship. Heinicka, a sophomore majoring in communication, is the daughter of Ronald and Paula Heinicka.

Stephanie L. Lazzaro, of Bethel Park, PA, who received a Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill Scholarship. Lazzaro, a freshman, is the daughter of Mark and Carol Lazzaro.

Kirstin M. Logan, of Cape May Court House, NJ, who is the recipient of the Sister Rose Angela Cunningham, SC, Scholarship. This scholarship was named in honor of Sister Rose Angela, Cunningham, SC, who chaired the Home Economics Department and co-founded the Seton Hill University Nursery School that is today’s Seton Hill University Child Development Center. This scholarship was established by Seton Hill Home Economics alumnae and friends to “honor [Sister Rose Angela’s] gentle, courteous, and caring manner which served as an inspiration and model for our personal growth as ‘Seton Hill Women.’” Logan, daughter of Mark and Alison Logan, is a sophomore majoring in Family and Consumer Sciences Education.

Jennifer T. McGee, of Oakdale, PA, who received a Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill Scholarship. McGee, a freshman business major, is the daughter of Thomas and Susan McGee.

Danielle L. Schrock, of Meyersdale, PA, who is the recipient of the Scott Biology Scholarship. This scholarship is named in honor of Sister Florence Marie Scott, SC, who taught biology at Seton Hill University from 1927 through 1963. Internationally acclaimed, her research work was supported by grants from the National Institutes of Health. A senior biology major, Schrock is the daughter of Roger and Dianne Schrock.

Lorin E. Schumacher, of Middlebury, IN, who received the Sister Miriam Joseph Murphy, SC, Scholarship. This scholarship is named in honor of Sister Miriam Joseph Murphy, SC, who served as a professor in the English Department for 43 years. This scholarship is awarded to one or more sophomore students who demonstrate promise as English majors. Schumacher, a senior majoring in English literature, is the daughter of Arnold and Lorilee Schumacher.

Logan I. Sierra, of Ligonier, PA, who is the recipient of a Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill Scholarship. Logan is a junior majoring in international studies.

Clare A. Simmers, of Pittsburgh, PA, who received a Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill Scholarship. Simmers. A sophomore psychology major, is the daughter of Todd & Anne Simmers.

Jaynelle L. Stevens, of Elmora, PA, who is the recipient of a Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill Scholarship and a Wilma and Robert Patterson Memorial Scholarship. This scholarship was established in 1989 with a gift from Wilma Klein Patterson to the Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill. The gift is to be used at the discretion of the sisters to assist women with the expenses of an education. Stevens is a senior who is majoring in political science and business. She is the daughter of John and Jacquelyn Stevens.

Sally A. Stone, of New York, NY, who received the Sister De Chantel Leis, SC, Scholarship. This scholarship is named for Sister de Chantel Leis, SC, who taught Latin and served as Department Chair, Dean of Women, and Director of Alumnae Relations during her tenure at Seton Hill University. Stone, a junior psychology major, is the daughter of Stuart Stone and Dinorah Perez.

Amanda L. Swartz, of Greensburg, PA, who is the recipient of a Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill Scholarship. Swartz is the daughter of Robert and Anna Jean Swartz. She is a senior majoring in psychology.

Ashley D. White, of Pittsburgh, PA, who received a Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill Scholarship. White, a freshman business major, is the daughter of David and Ellen White.

Beth A. Zapola, of Johnstown, PA, who is the recipient of a Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill Scholarship and a Wilma and Robert Patterson Memorial Scholarship. This scholarship was established in 1989 with a gift from Wilma Klein Patterson to the Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill. The gift was to be used at the discretion of the sisters to assist women with the expenses of an education. Zapola is a senior dietetics major. She is the daughter of Edward and Deborah Zapola.
