First Cohort of STEPP Forward Program Finds Demand with Pittsburgh Region Entrepreneurs

Nearly 150 entrepreneurs across southwestern Pennsylvania engaged in the first cohort of Seton Hill University’s STEPP Forward Program - 50% more than the program’s initial goal of working with 100 small business owners.

The STEPP (Supportive Training, Entrepreneurial Education, and Partnership Pathways) Forward Program is a community-driven initiative designed to empower local entrepreneurs through tailored business training, education, mentorship, and strategic partnerships housed within the School of Business and Technology at Seton Hill University. It is being financed, in part, by a grant from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development.

The STEPP Forward program is offered in cohort models of individuals or small businesses that are interested in developing or growing a business across eight counties in southwestern Pennsylvania.

By identifying innovative pathways for economic growth, the Program assists small business owners to expand their business potential and skills, impact and contribute to their communities, and drive lasting economic change in a supportive ecosystem. Program participants gain access to capital, education, networking opportunities, and support for business owners.

During the first cohort, entrepreneurs from a variety of backgrounds and business types - including counseling centers, restaurants, entertainment venues and arborists - met in small groups across Westmoreland, Fayette, Cambria and Allegheny counties to receive guidance from experts on how best to move forward with their business plans.

The sessions culminated with a pitch competition that enabled the entrepreneurs to present their businesses, receive expert feedback, and compete for cash awards and professional marketing starter packages designed to bring their ventures to the next level.

While the first cohort is complete, the second cohort is underway and applications for the program are accepted on a rolling basis. To apply for the program or to find additional program information, visit setonhill.edu/STEPPForward.
