Dr. Alvin Simpson is a two-time Grammy-nominated music educator who currently serves as an Assistant Professor of Music and Coordinator of the Music Education program at Seton Hill University. He holds a B.M. in Music Education from Seton Hill University, an M.M. in Trumpet Performance from Duquesne University, and a Ph.D. in Music Education from the Eastman School of Music. Prior to teaching at Seton Hill, Dr. Simpson served as the Director of Bands at West Liberty University in West Liberty, West Virginia, where he taught music education courses, supervised student teachers, taught trumpet, and directed the marching band and concert bands. He also taught elementary and middle school band and general music in the Punxsutawney Area School District. Dr. Simpson is an active member and presenter at a variety of state, national, and international music education conferences. He has authored several articles in the field of music education that have been published in Update: Applications of Research in Music Education. His research interests include teacher musicianship, teacher preparation, instrumental methods, curriculum, assessment, and music teacher identity. Dr. Simpson is also the developer of Practice Pet!, a mobile app featuring a virtual pet companion that uses gamification to help musicians build consistent practice habits.
