2017-2018 Concert Season

Masquerades

Sunday, November 19, 2017 - 4 p.m.

Music selected for this concert includes pieces and composers who have experimented with the idea of imitation and parody. Offenbach’s Orpheus from the Underworld is a satire based on the classic story of Orpheus. Composing under the pseudonym Peter Warlock, Philip Heseltine was not only known for his music, but also a somewhat infamous lifestyle. Hungarian Dance No. 5 was often thought to originate from a traditional folksong (even by the composer himself), however it was only inspired by “folk-like” music. Finally, Suite for Strings is an original work written in the style of Britten, Holst, and Vaughan Williams.

Program

Peter Warlock (1894-1903) - Capriol Suite (1926)

John Rutter (b. 1945) -Suite for Strings (1971)
