GREENSBURG, PA-Seton Hill University honored 13 alumnae with the Distinguished Alumnae Leadership Award, as a part of the University’s annual Alumnae Weekend celebrations. Distinguished Alumnae are honored for their outstanding achievement and leadership in one or more of the following areas: education, business and professions, science and technology, arts, voluntary services and philanthropy.

Following is the list of recipients:

  • Sister Marian Teresa Dury of Musoma, Tanzania graduated from Seton Hill in 1942 with a degree in biology and earned a master degree in nursing from Yale University School of Nursing. Sister Marian established and supervised the first Catholic secondary school for women in Tanzania at Marian College where she taught biology and health. She currently teaches English to the candidates of Immaculate Heart Sisters of Africa.

  • Sister Mary Naab of Monrovia, California attended Seton Hill from 1938-1940. She later graduated from Mahattanville College, in 1944 with a degree in sociology. Sister Mary was elected chair of the Hawaii Chapter, National Association of Social Workers and established Catholic education in Hawaii. She is currently a social service volunteer for the Maryknoll Sisters Congregational Center.

  • Martha Welty Vazquez of Reston, Virginia graduated from Seton Hill in 1942 with a degree in English and earned her masters from the University of Pittsburgh. She initiated the Arts Center of Williamsburg and is currently a retired director of the Williamsburg Regional Library.

  • Eleanor Hannon Judah of Washington, D.C. graduated from Seton Hill in 1947 with a degree in psychology and sociology and earned her masters in social work and D.S.W. from the School of Social Services at Catholic University of America. She is the editor of Social Thought, the official publication of Catholic Charities U.S.A. She is currently a retired faculty member of the School of Social Work at Catholic University of America.

  • Marjorie Firsching Shipe of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania graduated from Seton Hill in 1947 with a degree in merchandising and earned her masters from the University of Pittsburgh. She received a certificate from Ecole Americain des Beaux Arts in Fontainbleau, France. She is a former buyer for the Joseph Horne Company and professor at Seton Hill. Shipe is currently a Board member of the Associated Artists of Pittsburgh.

  • Beatrice Mulvehill Palmer of Minneapolis, Illinois graduated from Seton Hill in 1952 with a degree in psychology and earned her masters in theology at the College of Saint Catherine. She received a certificate from the Harvard-Radcliff Program in Business Administration from Radcliffe College in 1953. Palmer is a former Director of Field Education and the Deacon Formation Program in the Archdiocese of Saint Paul-Minneapolis. She is currently a retired coordinator of the Pastoral Ministry Certificate Program and member of their Theology Department.

  • Elaine Curran of Hubbard, Ohio graduated from Seton Hill in 1957 with a degree in sociology and earned her M.S.W. from the University of Pittsburgh. She received a certificate in Thanatology from Mount Ida College in Newton Center, Massachusetts. She was the Selected Social Worker of the Year in the Eastern Ohio Programming Area in 1988. Elaine Curran is the founder of KIDS GRIEVE TOO, INC. in Youngstown, Ohio.

  • Alyce Holden Sheridan of Worthington, Ohio graduated from Seton Hill in 1957 with a degree in psychology. She is the former president of the Seton Hill Alumnae Corporation. She initiated the program to improve and restore the parlors in the Administration Building at Seton Hill. She is a member of the Christ Child Society, an organization that provides clothing to needy children.

  • Sister Colette Toler of Greensburg, Pennsylvania graduated from Seton Hill in 1957 with a degree in music and earned her masters and doctorate degree in English at the University of Notre Dame. She served as Seton Hill’s Academic Dean for 11 years. Sister Colette taught at Seton Hill for 34 years and served as the Chair of the English Department.

  • Ruth Dowling Kelly of Santa Fe, New Mexico graduated from Seton Hill in 1962 with a degree in mathematics and earned her masters at Duquesne University. She was selected as the “Trustee of the Year” by the New Mexico Library Association. She is the Senior Staff Advisor on the Director of Boards and Commissions in the Office of Governor Gary E. Johnson. Kelly is the president of the Library Board in Roswell, New Mexico.

  • Kathleen Huebner of Cheltenham, Pennsylvania graduated from Seton Hill in 1967 with a degree in music and psychology and earned her masters and doctorate degree in special education from the University of Pittsburgh. She is the Associate Dean and a professor at the Pennsylvania College of Optometry. Huebner is the author of 29 books and 39 journal articles. She produced a series of textbooks to aid teachers of deaf and blind students. In addition, she is a former singer for the Pittsburgh Opera.

  • Sister Sylvia Thibodeaux of New Orleans, Louisiana graduated from Seton Hill in 1967 with a degree in English and American History and earned her masters in administration and supervision at Antioch Graduate School in Washington, D.C. She received a certificate in formative spirituality and theology from Duquesne University. Sister Sylvia established and managed the first church-based schools in Nigeria. She studied in Rome where she became the foundress of the Sisters of the Holy Family.

  • Anne Brower of Shorewood, Wisconsin graduated from Seton Hill in 1972 with a degree in English and earned her masters at the University of South Florida and juris doctorate at the University of Virginia. She is the assistant General Counsel in the investment law department at the Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company. Brower was a former high school math teacher in West Africa and Peace Corps volunteer.

  • Margretta Stokes Tucker of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania graduated from Seton Hill in 1977 with a degree in religious studies and earned her masters and doctorate from Duquesne University. She studied Holocaust Education in Israel and is a former director of religious education at Saint Bendict the Moor Church. She is currently the director of black Catholic ministries in the Diocese of Pittsburgh.

  • Dayle Bonnie-Lynn Griffin of Oakdale, Pennsylvania graduated from Seton Hill in 1987 with a degree in biology and earned her doctorate from Howard University. She is the medical director of pediatrics and newborn services at Saint Clair Hospital in Pittsburgh. She established the pediatric clinic at the Jubilee Kitchen and was selected as one of the Top 25 Women Doctors Making a Difference in Pittsburgh. She works annually with the Mission for Haiti Children.
