Seton Hill Launching New Online Certificate Programs in Big Data, Software Development

Seton Hill University will begin offering two new online professional certificate programs in data analytics (big data) and software application development. The programs, which will have three start times a year, will begin March 27.

“The Allegheny Conference on Community Development’s Inflection Point report highlights the Pittsburgh region’s need for skilled employees, particularly in the technology field as more companies are locating operations in this region,” said Mary C. Finger, Ed.D., Seton Hill president.  “The new certificate programs in data analytics and software application development, along with the newly-launched major in cybersecurity, will ensure that Seton Hill is able to meet the region’s needs and provide our students with the education that will lead to successful careers.”

“The new certificate programs will provide working professionals with another avenue for learning,” said Seton Hill Provost Susan Yochum, SC, Ph.D. “The online programs, which use a Story-Centered Learning approach, align with Seton Hill’s liberal arts curriculum that encourages students to think critically and problem solve. By providing these certificate programs grounded in real-world scenarios, Seton Hill will help prepare students for positions with regional firms such as Google, Amazon and Uber, in particular.  Seton Hill wants to help build the talent base these firms require in order to continue to grow.”

The fully-online certificate programs will allow students to complete projects by taking on real-life roles and engaging in actual workplace scenarios.

Students studying in the data analytics program will learn how to analyze massively large data sets, discover and exploit data patterns, develop predictive models and draw inferences, make decisions and present complex findings from big data.

The data analytics program allows students to develop the skills necessary to work with big data and provides them with the capacity to identify trends that ensure data drives decision-making. As organizations rely on big data to help them solve current issues and anticipate future problems, employees with the ability to analyze data are of critical importance.

The software application development certificate program will prepare students to build responsive mobile-friendly web pages and smart device interfaces, native mobile applications for smartphones and both interactive front-end applications for web and mobile deployment and back-end web services and data repositories.

Both programs can be completed in less than a year.
