iPad2 for Everyone!
Our students have big ideas, and unique learning styles. At Seton Hill, we respect that. In fact, we encourage it. We might be a small university, but we've got some big ideas of our own. That's why we were the first university to give our faculty and every full-time student an iPad in 2010 - and why new full-time students will receive an iPad2 in 2011. (In addition to the MacBook Pro we give all of our incoming freshmen.)
Find out how Seton Hill faculty, students and staff use mobile technologies to discover, create, communicate and learn.
The Griffin Technology Advantage
We call our mobile learning program the Griffin Technology Advantage, and it provides our students and faculty with the best in mobile technology and everything they need to use it with ease, from a robust campus-wide wireless network to specially-trained technical support.
New discoveries, like learning itself, happen every day, everywhere people gather to discuss ideas, solve problems or share creative expression. And we want our academic community to have 24/7 access to that world of learning, in addition to the tools they need to engage in it fully.
Individual access to the best in modern mobile technology is part of our commitment to ensuring that our students are, in the words of Elizabeth Ann Seton, "fit for that world in which you are destined to live." It also prepares them to be uniquely suited for whatever careers they choose - even those that have not yet been created.
Faculty Committed to Highly Engaged Learning
Seton Hill's faculty understand that each student has a unique learning style. Some students learn best by attending lectures and writing papers; others excel when given the opportunity to research a topic and create a video or an audio podcast. To this end, Seton Hill is committed to moving past the teaching of traditional research skills to what we like to call "creative literacy" - teaching students not just how to find the information they need, but how to process it in a way that allows them to make sense of the information, apply it to actual situations and use it to solve problems.
Fostering Creative Literacy by:
Connecting students and teachers to versatile, dynamic communities of learners.
Providing linkages and connections throughout our academic and co-curricular environments.
Allowing any classroom to become a virtual computer lab.
Providing access to both Mac and PC-based software applications from a single hardware device.
Increasing more interactive and in-depth teaching and learning experiences.
Supporting our vibrant campus environment by increasing student learning and entertainment opportunities.
About the Technology
All new full-time students entering Seton Hill receive a 16GB iPad2. All full-time first-year undergraduate students at Seton Hill also receive a 13" MacBook Pro laptop. While the University owns (and supports) this technology, students are not restricted in its use. After two years, Seton Hill replaces the laptop with a new one that students can take with them when they graduate.
Why Apple Products?
We believe the products we've chosen for our students represent the best in modern mobile technology at this time. The products are also designed with features that reduce environmental impact.
Seton Hill's Steinway concert grand piano is signed by renowned pianist Lang Lang. See Lang Lang playing "Flight of the Bumblebee" on an iPad here.
Seton Hill is a Catholic university rooted in Judeo-Christian values. In the tradition of Elizabeth Ann Seton, we educate students to think and act critically,
creatively, and ethically as productive members of society committed to transforming the world.
