Teaching Philosophy
Students receive training that is designed to provide a basic set of techniques, allowing students to pursue the avenue of guitar playing that most interests them, be it classical, jazz, folk, or rock. While emphasis will be on developing skills in playing the guitar, a basic understanding of the principles of music theory as applied to the guitar will also be acquired.
My teaching reflects an integrated philosophy of musicianship skills and methodology. It includes objectives in the psychomotor (singing and playing), cognitive (thinking/knowledge skills), and affective (attitudes/interests/appreciation/feelings) domains. Since it is essential that players develop musicianship skills transferable to any future musical endeavors, the musical repertoire that is examined and discussed is broad, extensive and up-to-date.
Additional Information
My compositions include a concerto for guitar and orchestra, various orchestral works, a string quartet, many works for solo guitar, guitar with mixed ensemble, and a number of rock and jazz pieces. My most recent composition, commissioned by the Westmoreland Symphonic Winds in memory of two members of the ensemble who were killed in the terrorist bombing of Pan Am flight 103 in 1988, will premiere in the fall of 2005. I also performs frequently as a soloist, with the Ferla-Marcinizyn Guitar Duo, flautist Tom Godfrey, Acoustic Swing (jazz trio), contralto Daphne Alderson, and with groups ranging from the Bach Choir of Pittsburgh to the Pittsburgh Playhouse Professional Company Ensemble. I teach guitar at Carnegie Mellon University, guitar and composition at Seton Hill University, and the music portion of the class "The Arts and Human Experience" through the art history department at Duquesne University. I am also on the advisory board of GSFA, the Guitar Society of Fine Arts.
