Information Technology Department
If you are not eligible for the Griffin Technology Mac program, a resident student's computer should meet the following minimum requirements for basic computing needs (Internet and Office).
These requirements will NOT suffice for graphic and video editing or other high performance software such as games. Virtually every NEW computer purchased will well exceed these specs:
General
- 1 GB RAM (2+ GB RAM - is preferred)
- DVD Drive
- Either desktop or laptop/notebook computers are acceptable for residence hall use.
- If you don't have wireless you will also need a Cat 5 patch cable which is available for purchase at the Help Desk for a minimal fee.
- A software firewall is also recommended and is included for free in Windows and Mac OS X.
- Wireless connections require 802.11a/b/g/n WPA-2 equipped network cards.
Mac
- Intel CPU
- OS X "Tiger" 10.4.4 (this was the first version to support Intel CPUs)
Windows
- 550+ MHz CPU
- XP SP3 or newer
- Vipre Enterprise Anti-Virus is provided to students with Windows PCs for free
While other conflicts may exist, please do not expect U3 flash drives to work in public labs. Illinois State University wrote a great explanation at their website .
