The Griffin football team lost to West Liberty 48-21 on Saturday. With the loss, SHU drops to 1-9 overall (0-8 in WVIAC). The #12 ranked Hilltoppers used a big day from quarterback Zach Amedro to defeat the Griffins and claim the WVIAC championship this year.
Almost the entire first half was controlled by West Liberty as quarterback Zach Amedro threw for 2 touchdowns and ran for another to jump out to a 21-0 lead after the first quarter. The Hilltoppers put up another fourteen points in the second and were leading 34-0 before the Griffins were able to get on the board. With only 55 seconds left in the first half, SHU quarterback Nick Monteleone threw a 28 yard touchdown pass to Tyler Roby. The drive went 45 yards on 4 plays and took only 53 seconds. However, the Griffins went into the half trailing 34-7.
Much of the third quarter went back and forth until West Liberty scored with 1:52 left in the quarter. The Griffin's responded back with a touchdown of their own when Zach Delo was on the receiving end of another Monteleone pass. This one was from 28 yards out and ended the third quarter of play. The score after three was 41-14.
The final quarter had touchdowns by both teams. First, Tyler Roby scored his second touchdown of the game off of a 50 yard strike from Monteleone. Unfortunately, it was too little too late for SHU and West Liberty put the icing on the cake with one last score late in the fourth. The final score West Liberty 48 Seton Hill 21. West Liberty earns the WVIAC crown with the victory and most likely a post-season birth.
Antwarn Jones led the way on the ground with 92 yards on 21 carries. Jones has now moved into third place on the all-time WVIAC career rushing list with 4,130 yards. Monteleone finished 15-29 for 235 yards and 3 touchdowns. Roby led the receiving corps with 4 grabs for 110 yards and 2 touchdowns. Dorian Scott also had 3 catches for 42 yards for SHU. Defensively, Jeremy Haskins led SHU with 10 tackles. Chris Galadyk also played solid and finished with 9 stops.
Next Saturday, the Griffins host Urbana for their senior day and season finale. Game time is set for 3 PM.
