By: SID - Monday, October 26, 2009

The Griffins picked up a key Atlantic Region win on Monday afternoon with a 3-1 win over California (PA) at Roadman Park. Cal was ranked fifth in the latest NCAA Atlantic Regional rankings. SHU improves to 9-6-3 while Cal falls to 11-6 on the season.

Cal started the game off fast and had a great scoring chance 20 seconds into the contest but Jon DeLuca made one of his five saves and from that point on the Griffins dominated the play. Doug Schmitt put the Griffins up 1-0 with a goal at the 4:51 mark of the first half. Mike Belsito made the score 2-0 seven minutes later as he fired a shot past Cal keeper Derek Yobbi. Belsito scored off a throw in from Garrett Fishaw. The game went to the half with SHU ahead 2-0. Twenty minutes into the second half, Mike Oliver made it 3-0. Oliver scored on a breakaway after a great pass from Belsito. Cal scored less than a minute later on a penalty kick but DeLuca and the Griffin defense was strong to preserve the win.

Belsito, who was celebrating his birthday, led the Griffins with 4 shots and the goal and assist. DeLuca maded 5 saves in net. SHU returns to action on Wednesday when they travel to Lake Erie and closes out the regular season on Saturday when they host Ohio Valley.
