The Griffin men's soccer team dropped its first contest of the season, falling 2-1 to Charleston in the WVIAC opener for the Griffins. Just a day after learning that they had moved into the top 25 of the NSCAA, the Griffins controlled the first 20 minutes of the game and took a 1-0 lead at the 17:11 mark of the first half. Mike Pistentis took a pass from Mike Oliver and beat the UC keeper to give the Griffins the early lead. From that point on it was all Charleston as the Golden Eagles controlled the game's final 70 minutes. UC scored on a penalty kick with less than 8 minutes to play in the first half to send the game into the half tied. Charleston scored the game winner with 35 minutes to play in the game on a 2-1. Griffin goalie Jon Deluca stood on his head in net making 12 saves, many of them of the spectacular variety. SHU was outshot 21-7 in the game with just 2 shots in the second half. The Griffins will look to get back on the winning track on Saturday when they host Wheeling Jesuit.
