SHU Falls on the Road at Ohio Dominican
By: SID - Saturday, September 05, 2009

The Griffin football team dropped to 1-1 on the season following a 44-21 loss on the road at Ohio Dominican on Saturday evening. Darnell Jones and Daniel Butler each scored a rushing touchdown and Sammy Tranks caught a touchdown pass for the Griffins. Unfortunately, the scoring stopped there for Seton Hill. Ohio Dominican scored points on 8 out of there 11 drives of the game. The Panthers jumped out to an early 24-0 lead before Seton Hill was able to get on the scoreboard. Darnell Jones' 2 yard plunge late in the first half capped a very impressive 11 play 80 yard drive that cut the Panther lead to 24-7. After the Seton Hill defense registered its first three and out of the game, Sammy Tranks weaved in and out of Panther defenders on his way to a punt return of 62 yards. However, a few plays later, the Griffins threw an interception in the Ohio Dominican endzone spoiling a chance to cut the Panther lead to two scores right before the half. Instead, Ohio Dominican was able to drive down the field with a few big plays and expand their lead to 27-7 going into the half. The second half was much like the first in that the Griffins could not quite close the scoring gap. Midway through the third quarter, quarterback Nick Monteleone was able to find Tranks for an 18 yard touchdown. The scoring drive, which went 8 plays and spanned 65 yards, helped to cut the lead to 30-14. Yet again, Ohio Dominican responded with two more touchdown drives of their own to increase the lead to 44-14. A late touchdown run by Daneil Butler concluded the scoring for the night. Leading the way for the Griffin offense was quarterback Nick Monteleone who was 10-14 for 99 yards and one scoring strike. Another bright spot was Seton Hill's ability to run the football as they finished with 154 yards on the ground. Jones led the way with 15 carries for 64 yards while Daniel Butler chipped in 46 yards on 10 carries. Tranks led the receiving corp with 6 grabs for 99 yards and a touchdown. Sammy also finished with 118 additional yards on punt/kickoff returns. Leading the defense was Rob Ellis with 10 total tackles. Next week might prove to be another tough obstacle as Seton Hill plays host to the defending conference champion, Glennville State Pioneers. However, Seton Hill leads this series 2-0 all-time and looks to make it three in a row as they get back to their winning ways. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:00 pm at Offutt Field.
