Seton Hill Women's Soccer

The Seton Hill Women’s Soccer program enters their second season as full members of the WVIAC in 2009 after finishing their first season in 2008 with a 9-10-1 overall record. The Griffins finished 5-5 in WVIAC play, earning a sixth place finish and a playoff spot. SHU upset #3 seed Charleston in the first round, 1-0 before falling to Concord in the semifinals.

Last season the Griffins had two players earn all WVIAC honors. Desiree Gonzalez and Lauren Sauter each earned All WVIAC status as freshmen. Gonzalez was a second team selection with Sauter earning honorable mention status.

This year’s team returns ten of eleven starters from the 2008 squad and looks to make a bigger splash in the WVIAC this season. The team’s top three scorers return from last season in sophomores Desiree Gonzalez, Jackie Fawcett and Lauren Sauter. Fawcett, a midfielder, was the team’s leading goal scorer with 6 goals and 12 points. Gonzalez, who plays both forward and defense, also tallied 12 points with 4 goals and 4 assists. Sauter, another midfielder, was the team’s second leading scorer with 5 goals and 10 points. Also returning to aid the Griffin offense this season will be sophomore forward Amber Mondock along with sophomore midfielders Julia Deluca and Lauren Freeman and junior midfielder Emily Freeman. The defense should be a strong point for the Griffins as they return a very experienced backfield. Seniors Kady Daerr, Shannen Lyons and Kalie Mills along with juniors Angela Palumbo, Colleen Ereditario and Danielle Owens will be the Griffins last line of defense before the goalies. Returning in goal for the Griffins this season will be junior Jenna Forzano. Backing up Forzano and also seeing some playing time on the field will be senior Sam Gilarski.

This year’s freshman class will be looked upon to provide some depth at all positions for the Griffins. Red shirt freshman Mackiesh Taylor (St Croix, VI) leads this group as she will be looked upon to provide some scoring from the forward position. The rest of the freshman class includes midfielder Alysha Alaimo from Fonthill, Ontario, forward Deena Salameh from Gaithersburg, MD, defender Bevin Brogan from Pittsburgh, PA and forward Emily Mitchell from Ridgeway, PA.

The Griffins will open the season with two home games against Clarion and Daemen before hitting the road to take on Route 30 rival St Vincent on September 2nd. SHU will open WVIAC play on September 18th at defending WVIAC champion WV Wesleyan. Their first home WVIAC game will be on September 26th when they host Concord.
