Seton Hill Men's Soccer
This season the Griffin men’s soccer team will begin its second season of eligibility in the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. In their first season of eligibility, the Griffins were 9-9-2 overall and 4-5-1 in WVIAC play which was good for eighth place. This year’s team returns 10 of 11 starters who look to make an impact on the WVIAC standings.
Six Griffins, who all return this season, were named to All WVIAC team. They include second teamers Jon Gibson, Mike Pistentis, Garrett Fishaw and Mike Oliver. Tony Safran and Doug Schmitt were both selected to the team as honorable mentions.
This year’s team returns all but one goal scorer from last year’s team led by leading scorer Doug Schmitt, who had a team high 7 goals and 16 points. Also returning to the Griffins front line will be second leading scorer Garrett Fishaw. Fishaw tallied 6 goals and 3 assists. Senior forwards Mike Pistentis and Mike Oliver will also be looked upon to add to the Griffins scoring from their front line. Pistentis found the back of the net 5 times last season with Oliver adding 4 goals and 5 assists. Returnees at the midfield position include Tony Safran, Keith Campbell and Alex Bradshaw. The Griffins will need to replace defender Adam Galando, who will be a graduate assistant coach this season, on their back line return a solid group. The back line is led by Mike Powers and Jon Gibson. Mike Belsito, Pete Merranko, Kadeem Blanchard, Tom Caruso, Tim Harrer, and Paul Reiser will be looked upon to provide depth to the defense. The Griffins last line of defense will be returning goalie Jon Deluca. Freshmen Stephen Cuddy and Eddie Daerr will back up Deluca.
This year’s newcomers are highlighted by senior Joel Zalesky. Zalesky who was a star soccer player at Chartiers Valley, will join the soccer team this season after playing on the Griffins men’s lacrosse team for three seasons. The rest of this year’s class include defender Nico Maracco (Moon), defender Paul Cornelius (Scarborough, Ontario), defender Jonathan Dennis (East Stroudsburg), forward Bryan Meteny (Southmoreland) and defender Cory Fox (Southmoreland).
The Griffins open up their schedule on August 28th when they host PSAC foe Mercyhurst. SHU will travel down Route 30 on September 1st to take on St Vincent and open up WVIAC play on September 9th when they host Charleston. |
