Seton Hill Men's Lacrosse
The 2011 season was a memorable one for the Seton Hill University men’s lacrosse team. The team continued to make strides and push towards the elite level in Division II, completed their second season in the highly touted East Coast Conference, and saw several players recognized with yearend awards.
One thing that Seton Hill Lacrosse has proven throughout their short history is that they are willing to play the toughest competition available. Over the past 5 years Seton Hill has continually ranked among the top 10 in the nation for Strength of Schedule. 2011 was no different as the Griffins took on a total of nine teams ranked in the USILA top ten. And while the Griffins finished the season with a 7-7 record they can proudly boast that they did not lose to an unranked team. The Griffins can also be proud of the number 1 strength of schedule in 2011. Seton Hill University men's lacrosse team finished the season with an overall record of 7-7 and a conference record of 5-5. This included close one goal losses to East Coast Conference (ECCSports.org) rivals New York Institute of Technology, and eventual NCAA Champion Mercyhurst College.
In the first game of the season Seton Hill topped Belmont Abbey in a game that was tight throughout. Other key victories for SHU were against top ten ranked Saint Michael’s College, conference foes Wheeling Jesuit University, Dominican College, Lake Erie, Chestnut Hill, and Molloy College.
On the year the offense finished with 10.2 goals a game to finish 15th in the country. Freshman Attackman Matt Delmonico led the offensive with 42 pts (30 Goal, 12 Assist) which was good for the 25th in the nation, and 6th in the ECC. Sophomore James Delaney finished second to Delmonico with 35 pts (21 Goals, and 14 Assists) and was voted Second Team All Conference, Second Team All American, as well as preseason All American for the 2013 Season.
Chris Isles anchored the defense with a 52.9% save percentage which was good for 4th in the ECC. On the year the Griffins Defense held the opposition to 10.0 goals a game which is the lowest Goals Against Average in team history. Along with Isles a notable contributor to this record was senior defensemen David Robbins who finished the year with 46 ground balls. Robbins leading was selected as an Honorable Mention All Conference and selected to play in the USILA Division1 / Division 2 North South All Star Game.
The Griffins will face another challenging year in 2012 with yet another terrific schedule that includes 6 teams ranked in the preseason top 10. Seton Hill will open the season hosting perennial power LeMoyne College on February 18th 2012. On February 25th Seton Hill will open their East Coast Conference schedule with a trip to Long Island, NY to take on CW Post on February 25th, 2012.
The 2012 team holds great promise and the potential for a breakout year for the young squad. The Griffins return all but 2 starters from the 2011 team including eight of the top nine scorers and all but one defenseman.
