The Women’s Cross Country team and head coach Tim Creamer are ready for the challenges that lie ahead for them in the 2011 as they begin their sixth season as a member of the WVIAC. This season marks Coach Creamer’s tenth as head coach and he will return seven upper class women who have went through the trials and tribulations of a WVIAC Cross Country season. A talented freshman class of eight which looks to be one of the strongest in recent history will give the team the added depth to compete for a WVIAC crown. In 2011, Coach Creamer and the Griffins will look to improve upon their runner up WVIAC team finish at the 2010 WVIAC Cross Country Championships. This marks the second consecutive year the team has been second and they want to eliminate the bridesmade status and raise the trophy at the conference race in October. This year’s team will seek leadership from its three seniors Dianna Griffin, Katie Zaleskiewicz and Julie Pierret. Pierret was a second team all WVIAC selection last season. Juniors Maura Hansen and Janine Sarver along with sophomores Stephanie Pryor and Shelby Edwards will also provide the newcomers with leadership skills on and off the course. Pryor returns as a first team all conference runner, finishing tenth in last season’s championships. This year’s strong freshman class includes: Mary Janak, Jeannie Bujdos, Leah Schott, Megan Cala, Colleen Davis, Krista Albitz and Amber Cook. Coach Creamer expects many of the freshman women to make an immediate impact on the team’s dynamic and the team’s top seven runners.
The Griffins will compete in 5 invitational meets during the 2011 regular season, which are highlighted by the season opener the SHU Griffin Classic, the University of Notre Dame National Catholic Invitational and Paul Short Invitational hosted by Lehigh University. The men will also travel to meets at Davis and Elkins and Slippery Rock. The season will wind down at the WVIAC Cross Country Championships hosted by Glenville State College in late October along with the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional Championship in early November hosted by Slippery Rock University, where Creamer will look to qualify his team and individual’s for the NCAA National Championship meet November 19th in Spokane, Washington.
