Trettel, Griffins defeat Cal (PA) 11-7

Seton Hill (23-8) used two Pat Trettel home runs and 13 hits to defeat the third ranked regional California Vulcans (25-8) at Seton Hill University on Wednesday afternoon. The win extends the Griffins win streak to 13 games and snaps Cal’s eight game winning streak.
California (PA) struck first in the top of the first inning. After Troy Handza singled and stole second and third Sam DiMatteo launched a 2-2 pitch over the left field fence for a 2-0 Cal lead.
Seton Hill responded with two runs of their own in the home half of the inning. Both Mike McCarthy and JR Tenney singled and executed a double steal to position runner on second and third with no outs. Jared Littler brought home McCarthy with a RBI groundout and Pat Trettel hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield to plate Tenney and tie the score at two.
Seton Hill took its first lead of the game when Derek Donaldson singled home Dave McCarthy. Luke Pisarcik would then score on a Mike McCarthy sacrifice fly to make the score 4-2 after two innings of play.
Cal would close to within one after three straight singles scored DiMatteo scored on a Shane Busti single.
Pat Trettel took the first pitch and deposited it over the center field fence for his 11th of the year and pushed the Griffin lead to 5-3. Following Trettel’s homerun Mark Henry walked and Tom Deangelis was hit by a pitch to set up Dave McCarthy to sacrifice both runners over. Pisarcik then hit a ball down the line which was misplayed by Vulcans third baseman Mike Schmidt to score Henry and give the Griffins a 6-3 lead after three innings.
The Griffins struck again in the fourth inning with two more runs. Mike McCarthy led the inning off with a triple off the centerfield wall then Tenney was hit by a pitch to set up first and third with no one out. Jared Littler singled home McCarthy and after Tenney and Littler moved up on a wild pitch Pat Trettel drove home Tenney with a sacrifice fly for the 8-3 advantage.
After the Griffins scored a lone run in the bottom of the fifth the Vulcans got two more back in the top half of sixth. After two out singles by Aaron Ordy and Adam Links, Chuck Faust doubled home both runs and cut the lead to 9-5.
The Vulcans scored a single run in the seventh inning before the Griffins put the game away in the bottom half of the eighth. After leadoff hitter Jared Littler was hit by a pitch, Pat Trettel hit a line drive homerun, his second of the game, to make the score 11-6.
Jim Kirker took the loss for the Vulcans going only 1.1 innings while giving up four runs on four hits. Sam DiMatteo went 3 for 4 with two RBI and four runs scored while both Chuck Faust and Aaron Ordy each had two hits in the loss.
Andrew DiNardo picked up his second win of the season going the final five innings of the ballgame yielding three earned runs and six hits. Dan Astfalk was the Griffins starter and went four innings giving up three runs.
Pat Trettel went 3 for 3 on the day with five RBI to go along with his two homeruns while Tom Deangelis, JR Tenney and Mike McCarthy each had two hits in the win.
The Griffins will return to action on Thursdaywhen they host Indiana (PA) in a doubleheader. First pitch is set for 1:00 PM.
