NCAA Grants Seton Hill Active Membership Status Two Years Ahead of Schedule 07/23/08 - SID
It’s Official! When Seton Hill University began its trek towards active membership in NCAA Division II in 2006 as provisional members, the journey was expected to last at least four years. Due to a strong commitment by Seton Hill to swiftly and effectively meet NCAA guidelines and regulations, the NCAA has determined to elevate Seton Hill to an active member of the NCAA on September 1, 2008.
The active membership approval granted by the NCAA means all Griffin athletic teams and student-athletes are immediately eligible to compete in all NCAA and West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship events beginning with the upcoming 2008-09 season. Additionally, NCAA Division II active membership will allow Seton Hill teams and student-athletes to be listed in official NCAA statistics. Individuals will be eligible to be considered for recognition on many more national athletic and academic All-American teams.
When Seton Hill began the process of becoming an active member of NCAA Division II, colleges were required to have one exploratory year and four years as a provisional member. After Seton Hill’s exploratory years during the 2004-06 athletic seasons, the Griffins received membership in the WVIAC and applied for admission to the NCAA in the summer of 2006. Last season, Seton Hill was prohibited from competing in the WVIAC post-season tournaments in men’s and women’s basketball, volleyball, baseball, softball, men’s and women’s tennis and men’s and women’s soccer. This season all Seton Hill teams are eligible to participate in all conference tournaments and potentially earn spots in the NCAA championships.
