"El Derecho a Crecer"

In May 2012 Seton Hill students, led by Associate Professor of Spanish Debra Faszer-McMahon, Ph.D., helped build the foundation for a kindergarten room at Reina Sofia School in Managua, Nicaraugua. While there, they also created a mural titled "El derecho a crecer," or "the right to grow."

The Spanish major at Seton Hill doesn’t simply teach you a second language, it immerses you in a culture. Equal emphasis is placed on communities of Spanish speakers, and you will learn about their culture, history, art and politics from global and comparative perspectives. At Seton Hill, you can acquire professional proficiency even if entering the program with minimal Spanish language exposure.

The Program

Spanish is the second language of the United States in its number of speakers, and one of the four most widely spoken languages in the world. The Spanish major offers a wide range of courses in the language, literatures and cultures of the twenty Spanish-speaking countries in Europe and Latin America.

The courses in civilization and literature are complemented with offerings in cinema and popular culture, to provide an openness to critical thinking about the different manifestations of culture. In addition, at Seton Hill you will study in what has proven to be the best environment for effective language learning: classes of between 10 and 15 students.

Spanish is also available as a minor, which provides students with competency in the language and culture that they can use in their fields of specialization.

Students who are interested in becoming Spanish teachers can fulfill their educational requirements for teaching certification at the K - 12 level while earning their degree at Seton Hill.

Study Abroad

As a Spanish major, you will have multiple opportunities to study abroad, earning credits toward your degree while beginning your career as a scholar and professional on an international level.
