Personal Counseling
The Counseling Center offers group and individual personal counseling services to any Seton Hill University student. The Counseling Center is routinely staffed Monday through Friday with additional hours available by request. Students come to the counseling center for a wide range of concerns. Areas commonly explored include, but are not limited to, relationships, gender identification, alcohol and other drugs, depression, suicidal ideation, eating disorders, family problems, ACOA issues, sleep disturbance, roommate problems, concentration problems and stress. Students are encouraged to schedule appointments, however, walk-ins are welcome.
Frequently, a student comes to the Counseling Center through a friend, faculty, or resident assistant referral; for others, initial contact may be made directly with the staff. Once assistance is requested, the student helps to design a personalized and completely confidential program suited to his/her needs. A schedule of sessions is agreed upon or off campus referrals may be made.
All on-campus counseling services are provided at no cost to the student. Students are assured of complete confidentiality in their consultations. No information is released to College personnel, outside agencies, or individuals without the student's explicit authorization in advance. If, however, in the opinion of the counselor, there is a clear and immediate threat to the life or welfare of the student, to other students, or to the community, appropriate preventive actions will be taken.
Screening for Mental Health’s College Online Screening Program (for currently enrolled students only). Find out in a few minutes whether or not further professional consultation would be helpful to you.
Students can call to schedule an appointment or to request information.

Anorexia Nervosa is characterized by refusal to eat and a fear of food. Bulimia Nervosa is characterized by repeated episodes of binge eating followed by behaviors such as self-induced vomiting, laxative use, diuretics, fasting, or excessive exercise. Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia Nervosa can cause irreversible damage and can lead to death.
Contact the College Counseling Center for additional information or for a confidential screening.
Seasonal Affective Disorder
Characterized by sleep problems, overeating, depression, family problems, lethargy, physical problems and behavioral problems, Seasonal Affective Disorder [SAD] is caused from a lack of bright light. SAD has its onset in the fall/winter months and dissipates in spring and summer. Since SAD is caused from a lack of bright light, the treatment is photo therapy, or exposure to very bright light. The light must be at least 2500 lux, which is 5 times brighter than a well lit office.
The college Counseling Center offers Photo therapy sessions. Please call the center to determine if you are a candidate for photo therapy.
Insomnia
Insomnia is characterized by difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep for a prolonged period of time. Student's complaints of insomnia are sometimes attributable to excessive caffeine intake, erratic sleeping patterns, unmanaged stress, or worry, health problems, etc. If you are having difficulty sleeping consult with the counseling center to learn how to combat your insomnia.
Drug and alcohol prevention
Drug and alcohol prevention and education materials are provided to the entire Seton Hill community with factual information on alcohol and other drugs. Personal development is fostered through programs, lectures and experiences geared toward self-enhancement.
Primarily, these services enable students to gain a better understanding of themselves and a broader perspective on their life choices. The process and pace of developing skills as self-directed persons differ for each student. Consequently, the counseling staff provides opportunities to assist student in defining their values, becoming autonomous and independent, clarifying their personal and career goals, and choosing a pattern for interpersonal behavior.
