What Pharmacists Do
Pharmacists are medical professionals with an expertise in the chemical composition, use, and manufacturing of medications. Pharmacists work closely with both doctors and patients to develop appropriate plans of treatment and provide advice, monitoring and support services during medication therapy. Pharmacists can also hold positions in the pharmaceutical and insurance industries, in government programs, in research and development institutions, and as educators. Pharmacists, like other medical professionals, also have the option of choosing an area of specialization, including veterinary pharmacy, compounding pharmacy (the creation of customized medication), intravenous nutrition support, nuclear pharmacy (used for chemotherapy), geriatric pharmacy, and psychiatric pharmacy.
