Human Services Program
The Human Services major at Seton Hill University is an interdisciplinary program with an applied focus. Drawing on psychology, sociology, and social work, the major provides students with an understanding of the techniques used to analyze and conduct research on human behavior, and with the strategies needed to use the results of that research to enhance the well-being of the under-served and disadvantaged. By studying topics like addictions, mental illnesses, aging, and health care, students gain knowledge of the needs of specific populations. Courses on counseling methods, as well as internships and field experiences, develop skills needed to work with those populations.
Required Field Experience
In order to gain career-related experience, all majors are required to complete one or more internships. Students are assisted by faculty members in locating internship sites that correspond with their career interests. Internships entail a minimum of 80 hours in the field, and are guided by both a faculty member and a site supervisor. (Note: students with a history of employment in a human service field may meet this requirement by undertaking the process of Prior Learning Assessment.)
This major is designed for the Adult Degree Program students. Students not enrolled in that program should consult with their advisor to determine whether this major is appropriate, based on learning and career goals.
All candidates for the Bachelor of Arts degree in Human Services must complete the Liberal Arts Core requirements, the portfolio requirements, and the courses required for the major. A minimum of 120 credits is
