History Program
The history major at Seton Hill University fosters skills that consistently lead to personal and professional success: clear communication, awareness of
the multiple points of view that pertain to any issue or problem, self-discipline, and the ability to develop persuasive arguments using appropriate evidence
and reasoning. In the history major, students will also use methods that are more specific to the study of the past, including oral history and archival research.
Work with primary documents helps students understand the lives of people who lived in past times and allows them to become critical readers of source materials.
Geography, understanding the importance of place as well as time, is also integrated into the study of history at SHU. As their program continues, history majors
achieve a command of the content of American and European history, but they continue to use and expand their research abilities. The internship and the senior-level
courses encourage students to achieve identities as professionals with historical training. The relatively low number of credits in the major allows students to pursue
additional minors or majors in other fields.
