Sea, Sun, and Pyramids
Presenting research at an international conference is a wonderful way to explore new horizons as well as acquire knowledge in one's field. When my colleague and former professor, Dr. Spleth from WVU, mentioned to me the forthcoming African Literature Association conference in Alexandria, Egypt, there was no doubt in my mind that I needed to send a proposal. Two days in Cairo, and four days in Alexandria, at a time of international uncertainty, turned out to be one of the most fabulous of weeks ever. Attended by African, European, and American scholars, the conference was a great event. From attending sessions, although I am specialized in Francophone Africa, I became very interested in hearing what my colleagues, specialists of Anglophone Africa, had to say.
Besides exploring a downtown market in Cairo, the Giza pyramids, and various mosques, we also had the opportunity to visit the new Bibliotheca Alexandrina of Alexandria. Visiting this brand new, vast, and modern library, right on the Mediterranean sea, was like living in a dream. Walking along the promenade, answering questions from intrigued locals, and enjoying the sea and the sun, created wonderful memories and the desire to soon return to the African continent.
