San Jose, Costa Rica
John Spurlock, Ph.D.
This is me at the Poas volcano, near San Jose, Costa Rica. I spent about three weeks in Costa Rica in May and June 2003, to study Spanish and to experience the culture of the country. I also went to expand my understanding of geography in a setting quite different from Pennsylvania. I spent time in Monteverde Cloud forest (where you can walk on suspension bridges at treetops.) I hiked in rain forests near La Fortuna and near Manuel Antonio. I also hiked through jungle to reach the beach in Manuel Antonio national park. It is a beautiful beach, though you need to secure your lunch from predatory monkeys and iguanas. Central America is the newest part of North America, having emerged from the ocean 100 million years ago or so. It is still very active, geophysically speaking. There are five active volcanoes there. In addition tot he Poas volcano I also visited Arenal, where the lava flows at night are spectacular.
