About the Program

There's never been a better time to consider a career in nutrition and dietetics. People want to be healthier and more fit, yet obesity, diabetes mellitus, hypertension and heart disease are rampant in the U.S. With a degree in dietetics from Seton Hill, you will be prepared for a career that will help others live longer, happier lives. Let us help you to create a healthier world.

Seton Hill's Coordinated Program in Nutrition/Dietetics, accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education of the American Dietetic Association, will provide you with a science-based food and nutrition education that combines learning in the classroom with laboratory and supervised practice experience in community settings such as hospitals, schools, community service agencies, day care centers and long-term care facilities. After graduation, you will be eligible to take the national examination to become a registered dietitian and take advantage of a wide array of opportunities in health care, medicine, community service, industry, science, business and education.

If you have already earned a bachelor's degree in a different course of study, Seton Hill's Program in Nutrition/Dietetics also offers a post-baccalaureate certificate that will prepare you to enter the field without having to earn another bachelor's degree (although if you'd like a second degree, we can help you with that, too.)

Seton Hill's program also offers study abroad and study away opportunities. The Program recently sponsored a trip to Spain to study the culture and cuisine, the benefits of the Mediterranean diet, and local cheese, wine, olive oil, milk and specialty ham production techniques. As an upperclassman, you will travel to Washington, D.C. to visit Congress, the United States Department of Agriculture and the National Institutes of Health.

Seton Hill is a small university, so you will have the chance to get to know your professors (registered dietitians teach all nutrition courses) and your classmates, and to make new friends that will become your professional mentors and colleagues in the years to come. The Coordinated Program enrolls a maximum of ten students in the junior year and senior year so that all students have individualized attention in supervised practice settings. You will also benefit from a wide network of Seton Hill graduates who are successful clinical dietitians, food service directors and community dietitians.

The concentration of the Seton Hill Coordinated Program entitled Entrepreneurial Approaches to Dietetics Practice prepares our graduates to be innovative dietetics practitioners in employment settings or as private practitioners with their own businesses. Our curriculum has been infused with opportunities to develop mastery of entrepreneurial skills. Our program fosters your entrepreneurial spirit by providing experiences with a private practitioner and community dietitians. After taking a course in business plan development, our students develop a business plan and compete in a Coordinated Program Business Plan competition. The winning project is presented as a campus-wide event and the winning student is recognized as the Coordinated Program's Entrepreneur of the Year.

Companies hiring dietitians for clinical and management positions interview our senior students on campus each year. Students obtain valuable interviewing experience and often receive job offers as well.

At Seton Hill you will be studying in a signature degree program at a nationally-recognized liberal arts university, so you will receive not just the best in science education - you will graduate with a comprehensive skill set and a deeper understanding of the arts, sciences and humanities.

What is a Registered Dietitian (RD)?
The Registered Dietitian (RD) is nationally recognized as an expert in the field of food and nutrition. To become a Registered Dietitian, you are required to meet eligibility requirements established by the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education and pass a national registration examination.

What is a Licensed Dietitian-Nutritionist (LDN)?
The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania has defined requirements for obtaining the credential Licensed Dietitian-Nutritionist. The purpose of this legislation is to protect the public. Individuals with the credential LDN have met specific dietetics education, experience and examination requirements. Most of the other states in the United States have their own similar licensing or certification regulations concerning the practice of dietetics.
