Becoming Registered and Board Certified in Art Therapy

Supervised Art Therapy Hours
Upon completion of Seton Hill's M.A. in Art Therapy with Specialization in Counseling Program, you must complete 1000 supervised, direct client contact hours doing art therapy.

Art Therapy Registration (ATR Status)
Upon completion of the required 1000 supervised direct client contact hours you will be eligible for ATR status (Art Therapist, Registered) with the Art Therapy Credentials Board (ATCB).

Art Therapy Board Certification (ATR-BC status)
After attaining ATR status you will be eligible to sit for the Art Therapy Board Certification Exam (ATBCE). After passing the exam you will be an ATR-BC (Art Therapist, Registered - Board Certified).

The Art Therapy Credentials Board (ATCB) can provide detailed information about supervised art therapy hours, ATR status and the Art Therapy Board Certification exam.

Becoming a Licensed Professional Counselor in Pennsylvania

Supervised Counseling Hours
Upon completion of Seton Hill's master's degree program, graduates may begin accumulating the 3600 experience hours (direct and indirect hours) required for counseling licensure.

Counseling Licensure (LPC Status)
After completing 3600 supervised hours you will be eligible to apply for counseling licensure in the state of Pennsylvania. The Pennsylvania State Board of Social Workers, Marriage and Family Therapists and Professional Counselors determines standards and qualifications for licensing professional counselors. The Pennsylvania State Board accepts the Art Therapy Board Certification Exam (ATBCE) as one of a number of exams accepted toward counseling licensure.

The Pennsylvania State Board of Social Workers, Marriage and Family Therapists and Professional Counselors can provide detailed information on becoming a licensed counselor in Pennsylvania.

Applicants interested in obtaining counseling licensure in states other than Pennsylvania are encouraged to research the education, experience, and examination requirements needed to obtain a license in their state of choice.

Application of hours to different credentials
All experience hours that meet designated criteria and are supervised by appropriate personnel may be "double counted" toward both Art Therapy Registration and Professional Counseling Licensure.
