"Founded by the Sisters of Charity in 1918, Seton Hill University remains a Catholic university, and restates and commits itself to its mission as a liberal arts university grounded in the Catholic intellectual tradition. As a Catholic university, Seton Hill's educational mission, its philosophy, and practice, are shaped by its relationship to the teaching authority of the Roman Catholic Church. Guided by the teaching of the Church at the Second Vatican Council, the University fosters a community characterized by reverence and respect for the religious freedom of every person. "Elizabeth Ann Bayley Seton was a powerhouse of energy and love, constantly connecting by letters and messages to those she loved and cared for. Her spirit lives on in the Sisters of Charity, the foundresses of this university. From Revolutionary War America to the twenty-first century, the clarion call of charity is focal in our mission. Catholic identity on this campus must hold the same respect for the dignity of each person as was the cornerstone of the first Catholic school founded near Baltimore in 1810."
