Our Catholic Identity
Welcoming Community

"Founded by the Sisters of Charity in 1918, Seton Hill University remains a Catholic university, and restates and commits itself to its mission as a liberal arts university grounded in the Catholic intellectual tradition. As a Catholic university, Seton Hill's educational mission, its philosophy, and practice, are shaped by its relationship to the teaching authority of the Roman Catholic Church. Guided by the teaching of the Church at the Second Vatican Council, the University fosters a community characterized by reverence and respect for the religious freedom of every person. In this spirit, the University welcomes to its community of higher education persons of all faiths, races, and nationalities."
- Seton Hill University Statement of Catholic Identity, Adopted March 2000 by the Board of Trustees of Seton Hill University.

"Elizabeth Ann Bayley Seton was a powerhouse of energy and love, constantly connecting by letters and messages to those she loved and cared for. Her spirit lives on in the Sisters of Charity, the foundresses of this university. From Revolutionary War America to the twenty-first century, the clarion call of charity is focal in our mission. Catholic identity on this campus must hold the same respect for the dignity of each person as was the cornerstone of the first Catholic school founded near Baltimore in 1810."
- Sr. Vivien Linkhauer, President & Provincial Superior, Sisters of Charity of Seton Hil
Seton Hill University is committed to being an inclusive, welcoming community, celebrating the diversity of its members in both faith and culture. This respect is recognized in the University's words, actions, and policies, which reflect justice, collaboration, and dialogue.

In the spirit of the legacy and traditions of the Sisters of Charity, members of the campus community not only recognize their responsibility and concern for each other, but extend hospitality to others. The campus is open to the local community, and visitors find graciousness and warmth extended to them in the array of cultural and educational programs available.
