The 2011-2012 wrestling season is quickly approaching and the Griffin wrestling team is preparing for another grueling five month competition season. The team is led by senior All-American Kenny Trumbetta. Other members of the senior class include Ron Oswald, Billy Murphy and James Henderson.
The Griffins open the season with two weekend tournaments at Washington & Jefferson and Mercyhurst before traveling to Belmont Abbey for a tri-match including a matchup with #17 ranked Limestone College. The Griffins then host their first home match of the season with Lake Erie on December 3rd.
From there the schedule does not get any easier as the Griffins compete against teams in the top 20 Division II wrestling rankings: Pitt-Johnstown #8, Mercyhurst #11 and Shippensburg #20.
Trumbetta will again look to give the Griffins a great start to the match at the 125 pound spot. James Henderson will be wrestling at 133 pounds. Freshman AJ Fisher will wrestle at 141 pounds and Nick Nichols will be returning to the lineup at 149 pounds. Another freshman Adam Moranduzzo will be wrestling at 157 pounds. Kurt McCamley will be in the spot at 165 pounds with Randall Wagner hitting the mats at 174 pounds. Zach Benzio will be wrestling at 184 pounds and senior Ron Oswald will fill the heavyweight spot.
Individuals, including freshmen, that are expected to make impacts this season also are Stephen Smith, Gus Mohlenhrich, Mike Grant, Jake Sanford, Jamal Saunders, Shaqui Scott and Eric Minerd.
Additional home competitions are Thursday December 15th versus PSU-Greater Allegheny; Saturday, January 7th when the team host the SHU Quad Match and Tuesday February 7th when the team hosts Pitt Johnstown.
